Uniform and what to wear: a quick guide for parents

3 August 2026

The short version: nothing needs to be bought for a trial class. Comfortable clothes they can move in are enough, and bare feet or soft shoes work for most styles at a first visit.

Once a student has settled into a class, a few things become relevant. Ballet and tap classes need the proper outfit and shoes — partly so students are taught correctly, partly because looking like a group helps a class feel like one. Street and breakdance just needs comfortable clothes and trainers throughout. Adult classes have no uniform requirement at all.

For our younger children's classes, we also ask families to invest in a JC Dance branded onesie personalised with their child's name. It reinforces that they're part of a group, and it makes quick changes far easier — both between classes and at the annual show.

We'll always tell you exactly what's needed once your child has settled into a specific class — there's no need to guess or buy anything in advance. More in the FAQ.
